Location Penn Center, located on St. Helena's Island near Beaufort, SC, is an organization founded by Unitarian, Laura M. Towne, in 1863, as the first school for freed slaves during The Port Royal Reconstruction experiment. She and her companion, Ellen Murray, spent the next 40 years offering education, medical care, and advocacy for the people of the Sea Islands. Their story is an inspiration to us all as we work to stand on the side of love. Today Penn Center's mission is to promote and preserve the history and culture of the Sea Islands, serving as a local, national and international resource center, and acting as a catalyst for the development of programs for self-sufficiency. Penn Center has a beautiful, historic campus that offers meeting spaces, lodging, dining facilities, and a wonderful museum, which chronicals the amazing civil rights and empowerment history of Penn Center. UU Fellowship of Beaufort's office is located on Penn Center's campus.
