So Glad We're Here, Being Renewed in Community: A Joint TJD/DRUUMM Conference
A
special gathering of people of color in the Thomas Jefferson District
and in the wider UUA will be held at historic Penn Center on St. Helena
Island, SC (near Beaufort), February 25-27, 2011. Penn Center is
the site of a school founded by Unitarian Laura Towne in 1862 for
formerly enslaved people of the Sea Islands. It holds additional
significance due to its use by the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a
retreat center and a meeting site for the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference during the civil rights struggles of the 1960s.
The
TJD Board voted in August to approve the Anti-Racism Task Force's
request to provide $10,000 to enable all people of color from TJD
congregations to attend the conference at no cost.Lodging and meals for people of color in TJD congregations will be provided.
DRUUMM (Diverse & Revolutionary UU Multicultural Ministries) will hold its spring East Coast meeting at the same time.
