“Draw the Circle”
March 24, 2012

Where: First Unitarian Universalist Church of Richmond, Virginia
             1000 Blanton Avenue
             Richmond, Virginia

Cost: $10/per person

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Schedule:

  • 9:00: Registration
  • 9:30: Ingathering
  • 10:45: Break
  • 11:00: Interest Group Meetings (three interest groups have been scheduled on Worship/Music, Boards/Leadership, and Stewardship/Fundraising, and the registration process will give you the opportunity to suggest others)
  • 12:00: Lunch
  • 1:00: Speak Up Workshop: Do you find yourself at a loss for words when your coworker makes a sweeping statement about Muslims? Smile awkwardly when your friend mistakes a fellow restaurant patron who’s African American for a waitress and asks her to get him more hot sauce? Don’t get down on yourself - find your own words for speaking up effectively against oppression by coming to a safe place to practice responding in such situations. Facilitated by the First UU Committee on Racial and Ethnic Unity, we will discuss situations that leave you stalled in silence, explore what to say to turn those tense moments into opportunities to dismantle oppression, and engage in role plays to put words into action until you find the ones that fit for you.
  • 2:30: Closing Session
